The Silvery Gibbon Project is proud to present the inaugural
Internet Art Auction, showcasing some of our planet unique wildlife by
Australian artists.
The following artwork is available for auction for the period
Saturday 14 September to Sunday 22 September 2002.Proceeds from the auction will be used to support the
conservation of the Silvery Gibbon, a critically endangered gibbon endemic to
Java, Indonesia.
Thank you for your support.
The
Silvery Gibbon Project, based in Perth, Western Australia is a voluntary group of
concerned individuals working for the conservation of the Silvery Gibbon (Hylobates
Moloch) and its habitat on Java.
The
Silvery (or Javan) Gibbon has already lost 98% of its original habitat on the
Indonesian island of Java, and with the human population of 140 million, the
pressure on the remaining forest is extreme.
The
1994 Conservation Breeding Specialist Group Population and Habitat Viability
Assessment (PHVA) workshop in Java determined that the status for this species
is now critical, with the wild population estimated to be less than 2000
individuals.
These
gibbons now exist in some 21 discontinuous forest patches. The largest observed populations, all less
than 100 individuals, occur in three National Parks. These parks offer the best hope for protecting the Silvery Gibbon
in its natural range, as many of the other populations are not within protected
areas.
Since
the foundation of the Silvery Gibbon Project in 1991, we have funded a
scientific survey, assisted with scientific meetings, constructed an entrance
gate and hiking trail in Gunung Halimun National Park, and in partnership with
Conservation International have recently begun construction of the Javan Gibbon
Rescue & Rehabilitation Centre. /span>This Centre will restore full physical and mental health to
gibbons previously kept illegally as pets throughout Java. The aim of the Centre is to establish a
reserve of gibbon pairs producing naturally raised offspring. These offspring may be needed for
reintroduction to the wild in the future.
With
even more funds, we would support programs to encourage sustainable community
action to ensure those National Parks and other gibbon habitats remain secure
from encroachment.Securing the habitat
helps not only the Silvery Gibbon, but also other species dependent on the
forest for survival.
In June
2002 the Silvery Gibbon Project and its public fund, the Silvery Gibbon Project
Conservation Fund, was entered into the Register of Environmental
Organisations, and is entitled to receive tax deductible donations within
Australia.
